Welcome to Austin’s Cherrywood neighborhood, also known as French Place. This charming residential area is located less than three miles from Downtown Austin and is bordered by Airport Boulevard on the east, Manor Road on the south, Interstate 35 on the west, and Wilshire Boulevard on the north. One of East Austin’s most desirable neighborhoods to live in, and one of the last to be developed, Cherrywood was nothing more than cotton fields and trees until a development boom in the 1940s and 50s when soldiers returning home from the war brought about a need for new housing. Single-family homes sprouted up where trees once stood and cows grazed. Once commonly referred to as Maplewood, Cherrywood was eponymously named after the road which runs down the middle of this suburban paradise, effectively splitting the area in two. This neighborhood was originally intended for people on a limited budget but with unlimited good taste, according to its developers, who also built Pemberton Heights in Old West Austin.

Cherrywood is a unique neighborhood in that it has experienced periods of white flight, gentrification, blight, and redevelopment in the short amount of time it has been established. Each of those periods has brought new homeowners and residents that span nearly every age and race. Today, Cherrywood is a diverse neighborhood that offers both affordable and premium housing. Its proximity to popular Austin attractions and the University of Texas makes it appealing to college students, while its quiet, residential streets give it a suburban vibe that is irresistible to families. Bordered by I-35 on the west, easy access to the interstate makes this a convenient location for commuters that work Downtown. The housing stock in Cherrywood is an eclectic mix of early to mid-century single-family bungalows, large ranch-style homes with patios, and two-story duplexes. As with most East Austin neighborhoods, the steady increase in population has brought new construction and more modern architecture to Cherrywood.

As it reads on the Cherrywood Neighborhood Association website, Cherrywood’s motto is, “Keeping Austin Weird.” As a resident, you are welcome to keep it as weird as you would like, as this neighborhood is all about inclusivity and diversity. There are three wonderful public parks where you can express yourself. Patterson Park, the largest of the three, offers picnic tables, basketball and tennis courts, as well as a skate park and playground for the kids.
