Uptown is a laid-back residential area on Chicago’s Far North Side. The Uptown Entertainment District is now experiencing a revival, with new various music venues, nightclubs, restaurants and shops opening every year. Uptown Square, at the center of the Uptown Entertainment District, was designated as a National Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Other entertainment venues include the Uptown Theatre, the Riviera Theatre and the venerable Aragon Ballroom, which opened in 1926. In the 121-acre Graceland Cemetery are the burial sites of many famous Chicagoans. Montrose Beach has seasonal swimming and volleyball.
