Welcome to Fort Totten, a residential neighborhood located in Ward 5 of the northeastern quadrant of Washington, D.C. Named after the Civil War fort located in the region, at the top of a hill overlooking the area, Fort Totten, much like other neighborhoods in the area, holds historical significance. Remains of the fort can be seen in what is now a public park that offers picnic tables, benches, and nature trails. Fort Totten is bounded by the neighborhoods of Michigan Park and Queens Chapel to the east, Petworth and Brightwood Park to the west, and Manor Park to the north. Other notable nearby locations of interest include the Armed Forces Retirement Home, the Catholic University of America, and the Washington Hospital Center.
While Fort Totten is far from being considered a tourist attraction, it is home to several historic landmarks that bring residents from surrounding neighborhoods. Be sure to check out President Lincoln’s Cottage, as well as Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington’s oldest cemetery. This 86-acre piece of land serves as both a burial ground and a public park, where you will find beautiful monuments and mausoleums done by famous sculptors.
