Welcome to Hyde Square, a small residential district within Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Located in the northern section of Jamaica Plain, Hyde Square is bordered by Lamartine Street on the east, Boylston Street on the south, Huntington Avenue on the west, and Heath Street on the north. This sub-neighborhood started as an enclave of German and Irish immigrants in the early 1800s. Hyde Square underwent a drastic transformation in the 1840s when the influx of immigrants created a need for new businesses and schools for the children. The population steadily grew well into the 20th century, as Hyde Square became known as one of the best residential neighborhoods in the Boston area. This district underwent another radical transformation in the 1960s, when large numbers of Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, and Puerto Rican immigrants began relocating here, effectively transforming it into Boston’s first predominantly Latino neighborhood.
Bounded by the sprawling Roxbury neighborhood to the east, Hyde Square today is known as Boston’s Latin Quarter, the beating heart of Hispanic culture and life in Boston. One of the most defining features of this safe and friendly neighborhood is a sense of community activism and pride that transcends generations. Hyde Square has a rich history of community activism, as seen most recently in its successful grassroots mission to classify Hyde Square as an official cultural district within Jamaica Plain. Small, independently-owned business is another defining characteristic of Hyde Square, as most businesses in this cultural district employ less than ten people. Due to its popularity as a family-friendly neighborhood with quiet streets and lovely urban green spaces, Hyde Square continues to grow and become more diverse. Centre Street serves as the main commercial thoroughfare in Hyde Square, along which you will find an assortment of ethnic restaurants and local markets with bilingual signage. Some of the best Latin American cuisines can be found right here in Hyde Square, along Centre Street. There are also a few trendy nightlife spots that college students and professionals frequent on the weekends.
An excellent neighborhood for commuters working Downtown, Hyde Square is served by numerous subway stations along its eastern border. Living in Hyde Square, you will also have easy access to a plethora of bus stops, as well as the MBTA Green Line trolley at Heath Street station in the northwest corner of this cultural district. If you are looking for some outdoor activity, head over to popular Olmsted Park for walking trails, picnic spots, and picturesque ponds. A vibrant melting pot of Latino cultures, Hyde Square offers residents a comfortable and yet affordable existence without sacrificing any of the finer qualities that make the Greater Boston area so appealing.
