Upper Central Northeast is bordered by the neighborhoods of Deanwood and Lincoln Heights to the east, Lower Central NE to the south, Mayfair to the west, and Eastland Gardens to the north. Similar to its neighbors, much of Upper Central NE is heavily wooded with dense tree cover and houses set back from the roads, giving it a small-town, suburban feel. A low-density area with walkable streets and scarce commercial activity, Upper Central NE is a quiet neighborhood, popular amongst families looking for a safe place to raise kids. The housing stock of Upper Central NE mainly consists of small, 20th-century wood-frame and brick houses with yards, which is unique to a lot of residential property in Washington, D.C. Most of this neighborhood is often lumped together with the overarching area of Central Northeast, sometimes referred to as Mahaning Heights.
Despite it being low density, Upper Central Northeast is a diverse neighborhood with some of the added benefits that come with living in more densely-populated areas like Downtown. Access to public transportation makes this an appealing area for both college students and working professionals that commute. Served by the Minnesota Avenue station in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, the Orange Line of the Washington Metro will take commuters across the Anacostia River and over to Capitol Hill. The main commercial corridor in Upper Central NE exists along Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, where you will find fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, and a local market. Head south on Minnesota Avenue, towards Fort Mahan Park, to find additional restaurants and local stores.
Upper Central NE offers hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts and proximity to the popular Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, where you will find picnic spots and picturesque scenery of D.C.’s wetlands. The trails along Watts Branch, the largest tributary of the Anacostia River, provide an excellent place for you to ride your bike or get some fresh air. Born and raised in neighboring Deanwood, Marvin Gaye’s lasting impact on this D.C. area can be seen in the beautiful mosaic on display at Marvin Gaye Park, which occupies a two-mile stretch of green space along Watts Branch. Less than five miles away from all the excitement and entertainment that Penn Quarter has to offer, Upper Central NE is an easily accessible neighborhood, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Downtown.
