Lincoln Square, Manhattan got its name from the famous 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Initially, the area where Lincoln Center now stands was known as San Juan Hill, after the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. However, in the early 1900s, a movement to redevelop the area began, and it was decided that the new cultural center being built should be named after Lincoln. The area was then renamed to Lincoln Square in honor of the President’s life and legacy.
